The stories of car users being chased down the motorway, terrorised by a HGV on their bumper seem now to be a thing of the past. In fact, the Road Statistics Report of 2007 from the Highways Agency indicates that it's now much more likely to be the other way around. The report states that "very few" heavy goods vehicles exceeded their speed limit of 60 mph on motorways, where as 54% of car users exceed the 70 mph, with 18% travelling at 80 mph or faster. The 10 year period from 1997 to 2007 also saw a 42% decrease in the number of people killed or seriously injured in accidents involving a HGV. Considering that the amount of freight moved by HGV's in 2007 was 1869 million tonnes, and that there are over 446,000 HGV's on the road, this really does make the HGV's the gentle giants of the UK's motorways. |
