Amtrack Express Parcels has gone into
administration this month, citing weak consumer spending as one of the primary
reasons. Although Amtrack is probably
the most high profiled company to be hit by the tough delivery market
conditions other companies, such as E Pawson & Sons from Yorkshire, have
also fallen this week. Pawsons, like
Macfarlane Transport who bit the dust last month, blame the increasing fuel
prices in the UK. Amtrak previously escaped last year after
being forced into administration after a large customer collapsed owing Amtrak
a large amount of money. The current
management team of Amtrak took the company on in 2007 after the last collapse
and were described as being one of the industry’s most experienced management
teams. Amtrak owns and employs its own fleet of
vehicles and drivers, and this meant that unlike other parcel carriers that use
franchises, all of the increases in fuel costs, and all of the downturn from
reduced consumer spending, falls straight on Amtraks shoulders. Some of the networks that use franchisees may
have benefited from a little bit of cushioning from the harsh trading realities
that courier companies are currently finding themselves in. |
